How does
a Recreation for Life Walk/Run work?
With the
blessing of a municipality, usually the Mayor, a local organizing
committee is struck to manage the event.
In those
municipalities where the Mayor endorses the Walk/Run and can be
involved as a participant, the event is called the ‘Mayor’s
Walk/Run’.
The local
organizing committee works closely with the Provincial Walk/Run Co-ordinator
appointed by the Recreation for Life Foundation (RFLF). This
Coordinator is an expert in organizing and staging Walk/Runs. He/she
will not only provide technical guidance, but will also ensure basic
equipment is provided to stage the event. In addition, the
Provincial Coordinator will ensure that local organizers connect
with a specific Sobeys or IGA local store to ensure that nutritious
food and beverages are provided to all participants and volunteers
"free-of-charge".
Participants normally pre-register, although ‘same day’ registration
is usually permitted. On the event date, participants walk or run a
prescribed distance. The location of the Walk/Run is generally in a
large municipal green space and/or around the streets of the
community. It can also be held in an indoor track facility. A course
is marked out by the organizing committee.
